Accounting Program Faculty Spotlights
Our faculty puts the success of our students first. For example, as part of the program you will receive 1-1 consultation with your professor at the start of your program. Most faculty have 10+ years of teaching at the University of Miami as well a professional and practical experience. Prior teaching experience at MIT, Duke, the University of Michigan, the University of Rochester, and Georgetown University and prior professional experience inlcudes the American Taxation Association, Ernst & Young, Price Waterhouse, ExxonMobil, and The United States Goverment.
Shirley Dennis-Escoffier, PhD, CPA
Dr. Shirley Dennis-Escoffier received her PhD from the University of Miami and returned to UM after teaching in Hawaii and California. Dr. Dennis is a Certified Public Accountant licensed to practice in Florida and has work experience in both corporate and public accounting. She is a past president of the American Taxation Association and served on the Education Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Dr. Dennis has received several teaching awards including the University of Miami Excellence in Teaching Award and the School of Business Excellence in Teaching Award. She has published numerous articles in tax and accounting journals as well as several books including Taxation for Decision Makers.
Mark Friedman, PhD, CPA
For over 38 years, Dr. Mark Friedman has helped University of Miami students understand how to integrate accounting into their professional and personal lives. Dr. Friedman passed the CPA in New York, and received his doctorate from New York University. He has been teaching at UM since then.
He is actively involved in the Executive MBA, the Graduate Online Educational Incentive, the Special Accelerated Accounting program, the Summer Boot Camp and is a member of the American Accounting Association. Additionally, Dr. Friedman has received the Educators Award.
In addition to preparing students for a career in business, Dr. Friedman maintains close contact with the business community and the accounting profession. He is the past president of the Miami Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, and past chairman of the Micro Computer Committee of the Dade Chapter of the FICPA.
Joe Genovese, CPA
Joe Genovese is an adjunct instructor and teaches auditing. His experience includes 38 years as a partner and consultant with Ernst & Young and working in the Inspection Division of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. His practical experience includes the functional areas of auditing, transaction advisory due diligence, capital markets consulting, and QRM-independence consulting.
Genovese has worked both domestically and internationally—including seven years in Brazil. In addition, he has traveled and worked extensively throughout the world on various projects and assignments. Some of the industries he has experience in include: manufacturing, real estate, financial services, beverage, pharmaceutical, construction, retail and wholesale, governmental, and not-for-profit.
Genovese graduated with a BBA in accounting and is currently a licensed CPA in Florida, Massachusetts, and New York.
Oscar J. Hozmann, PhD
Oscar Holzmann is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the University of Miami where he teaches Financial Accounting undergraduate and graduate courses. He is a member of the Board of Directors of BFC Financial Corp., a public company with holdings in the real estate, finance, hospitality, food, and manufacturing industries.
Professor Holzmann is a member of the American Accounting Association and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He has published in Accounting, Organization and Society, The Accounting Review, and other academic journals, and he is a co-author of the FASB column for the Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance
Seth Levine, CPA
Seth Levine attended the University of Miami, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1983, his Master in Professional Accounting degree in 1985, and his Master of Business Administration in 1989. He began his professional career as an auditor and consultant with Price Waterhouse in 1985, and he became a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Florida in 1987. He has been teaching for the University of Miami since 1990, and has also served as a senior faculty member for the Becker CPA Review Course since 1989.
Mario Perez, CPA
Mario Perez attended Florida International University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1999 and a Master’s in Taxation in 2004. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree, he worked for ExxonMobil as a Senior Accountant. He joined the School of Business Administration faculty at the university in 2006. Professor Perez is also the lead faculty for the Becker CPA Review in South Florida. He teaches the Financial and Audit sections of the CPA exam and is ranked as one of the highest instructors in the nation. During the summer, he teaches an intensive CPA review course at the University of Miami Business School to help accounting graduates become certified.
Manuel Sicre, CMA
Manuel Sicre obtained his undergraduate degree from Florida International University and his Master’s of Business Administration from St. Thomas University. He attended Nova Southeastern University and completed all of his coursework and comprehensive exams toward his doctor of business administration degree in 1995. He is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
Sicre is a full time accounting lecturer at the University of Miami, where he has lectured since 1998, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, including online courses and lectures in Spanish for foreign students. He also acts as a business consultant for small to mid-size businesses and does significant work done in the not-for-profit area.
Sicre’s worked for the banking industry for over 30 years, including five and a half years for the U.S. government. Within the banking industry, Sicre worked primarily in operations and financial/accounting areas and has served as the chief financial officer for several privately and publicly held banking institutions. He has also served as the CFO for several mortgage companies and a health care provider.
Michael Werner, PhD, CPA
Michael Werner is the director of Accounting Master’s Programs and a lecturer at the University of Miami. He is also a visiting professor in the Department of Accounting at the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. He is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Master of Professional Accounting and a PhD in Management Science and Engineering. Michael is a textbook author with Pearson/Prentice Hall, Kendall Hunt Publishing, and Li Xin Accounting Publishing (Shanghai). He is past president of the Florida Association of Accounting Educators and currently serves on its steering committee. Michael has a diverse background in accounting, information systems, management and strategy implementation, and is often invited to speak at conferences and universities in the United States and China.
