Joe Natoli

Joe Natoli has been the University of Miami’s senior vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer since September 2006. 

As senior vice president, he manages the functions of accounting and finance, including investing endowment and pension assets, information technology, human resources, supply chain, research administration, risk management, real estate planning and construction, buildings and grounds, auxiliaries including the BankUnited Center and campus police.

From 2013 to 2015, he also served as interim-COO of UHealth, the University of Miami Health System, where he was responsible for operations of the University of Miami Hospital, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and the University of Miami Medical Group.  

The University of Miami is one of South Florida’s largest employers with more than 13,000 faculty and staff and revenues of $3.1 billion.

Prior to joining the University, Natoli spent 30 years with Knight Ridder, Inc., at the time, the nation’s second largest newspaper company, where he served as chairman and publisher of the company’s largest newspapers, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News.  He previously was president and publisher of the San Jose Mercury News, and president of the Miami Herald Publishing Company

He joined the University following the purchase of Knight Ridder by The McClatchy Company and subsequent divestiture of The Inquirer and Daily News.  Most of his newspaper career was spent in Miami, on the Knight Ridder corporate staff and at The Miami Herald, where positions held included controller, vice president of operations, general manager and president. 

He is a graduate of the University of South Florida and earned an MBA from Nova Southeastern University.  He completed the Harvard Advanced Management Program (AMP) and Managing Health Care Delivery.  He is a former CPA and instructor of the Becker CPA Review course. 

He is a trustee of the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation Board and a founding board member of the Dolphins Cancer Challenge which benefits the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.  He has chaired or co-chaired community-wide United Way campaigns in Miami-Dade County, Silicon Valley (San Jose) and Southeastern Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). 

Past honors include Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year by the Silicon Valley Philanthropy Association, Silver Medallion for Humanitarianism from the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews, Business School Alumni of the Year by the University of South Florida, Award of Excellence by the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and Special Achievement in Business by the National Italian-American Foundation.  In 2014, he was inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society, the Highest Honor attained by a student, faculty, administrator or alum at the University of Miami. 

He enjoys running, biking, playing basketball and cheering on the Hurricanes.  He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Joey and Danielle.
