Senior Vice President for Business and Finance and Chief Financial Officer
Joe Natoli has been the University of Miami’s senior vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer since September 2006.
As senior vice president, he manages the functions of accounting and finance, including investing endowment and pension assets, information technology, procurement, risk management, real estate planning and construction, buildings and grounds, auxiliaries including the BankUnited Center and campus police.
In 2013 and 2014, he also served as interim-COO of the Miller School of Medicine and UHealth, responsible for business operations that support the school’s clinical, research and teaching missions including the University of Miami Hospital, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the University of Miami Medical Group.
The University of Miami is one of South Florida’s largest employers with more than 13,000 faculty and staff and revenues of $2.6 billion.
Prior to joining the University, Natoli spent 30 years with Knight Ridder, Inc., at the time, the nation’s second largest newspaper company, where he served as chairman and publisher of the company’s largest newspapers, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News. He previously was president and publisher of the San Jose Mercury News, and president of the Miami Herald Publishing Company.
He joined the University following the purchase of Knight Ridder by The McClatchy Company and subsequent divestiture of The Inquirer and Daily News. Most of his newspaper career was spent in Miami, on the Knight Ridder corporate staff and at The Miami Herald, where positions held included controller, vice president of operations, general manager and president.
He is a graduate of the University of South Florida and earned an MBA from Nova Southeastern University. He has completed the Harvard Advanced Management Program (AMP) and Managing Health Care Delivery. He is a former CPA and instructor of the Becker CPA Review course.
He is a member of the board of directors of Coral Gables Trust Company, a leading provider of wealth management, trust and estate services in South Florida and the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation Board. He has chaired or co-chaired community-wide United Way campaigns in Miami-Dade County, Silicon Valley (San Jose) and Southeastern Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). He is a founding board member of the Dolphins Cycling Challenge which benefits the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Past honors include Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year by the Silicon Valley Philanthropy Association, Humanitarian Award by the South Florida Epilepsy Foundation, Business School Alumni of the Year by the University of South Florida, Award of Excellence by the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, Special Achievement in Business by the National Italian-American Foundation and Emerging Leaders by Florida Trend Magazine. In 2014, he was inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society, the Highest Honor Attained by a student, faculty, administrator or alum at the University of Miami.
He enjoys running, biking, playing basketball and cheering on the Hurricanes. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Joey and Danielle.
