Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of the University
Aileen Ugalde joined the University of Miami in 1994 as associate general counsel and became the executive director of the Presidential Search Committee in 2000, charged with finding a successor to Edward T. Foote, II, the fourth University of Miami president. Ms. Ugalde was named assistant to the president in 2001, serving the fifth University President Donna E. Shalala, until 2006. She was named vice president for government affairs in 2003, and served as the executive director of the 2004 Presidential Debate Committee, which hosted the first televised U.S. Presidential Debate in South Florida.
In 2006, Ms. Ugalde was appointed general counsel and secretary to the Board of Trustees. Most recently, she became the executive director of the 2014-2015 Presidential Search Committee, charged with selecting the sixth president of the University of Miami.
Ms. Ugalde received an A.B., magna cum laude, in Latin American Studies and International Relations from Harvard University in 1988 and her law degree, cum laude, from the University of Miami in 1991, where she was a Harvey T. Reid Scholar and served on the Law Review.
Ms. Ugalde is a member of the Cuban American Bar Association and the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, and the National Association of College and University Attorneys. Hispanic Business Magazine named Ms. Ugalde as one of its “100 Most Influential Hispanics” in 2006 and one of its “Top 20 Elite Women” in 2008. She was also named one of “The 20 Leading Latinas in Business” by Hispanic Enterprise Magazine in 2007. Ms. Ugalde served on the Board of Directors for City National Bank from 2006 until it was sold to Caja Madrid in 2008.
